Engaging in Career-Long Learning

Over the past year I've had the opportunity to attend a number of PDs already.

ATA

A PD on the definition of what the ATA is and what it’s function is.

A large breakdown on the various levels of contracts and certifications for first year teachers.

Behavior Intervention 101

Learned the importance of separating doer from the deed.

Precipitating factors - causes of behaviour over which we have no control

Punishment - enforcing obedience

Consequence - result or effect

When we change the adult's behaviour we change the kids' behaviour.

This isn't about you. Don't take it personally

The Art of Teaching

Tribes vs. Kagan

Learnt of the importance of varying the use of tests and assignments

Hogs vs Logs to describe the student that always wants attention to the one that never wants it

Surface learning vs Deep Learning

Professional Conduct is in Order

Learnt of the importance of delegating tasks, but not responsibility.

Learnt that the biggest complaint from parents was that their children were not treated with dignity, respect, or have not had their circumstance considered.

Must protest an assignment if we are not qualified.

Deeper Level Learning

Importance being willing to reflect and grow

We need to be able to push ourselves, so we know how to push the students

In order to understand deeper learning and deeper instruction we will need to:

1. Master content

2. Think critically

3. Be collaborative

4. Communicate effectively

5. Learn to learn

6. Develop Academic Mindset
